The Grand Military Parade
On October 1, 1984, a grand military parade was held at Tiananmen Square in Beijing to mark the 35th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China. This was the 12th grand military parade held since the founding of the PRC, as well as the first one to be held on National Day since 1959. The chief inspector of this truly significant parade was none other than Deng Xiaoping, the chief architect of China's reform and opening up. Deng wore a Mao suit and stood in the sunroof of a Red Flag limousine with special rails. As he inspected the People's Liberation Army troops, he had truly impressed audiences at home and abroad with his high spirits and great confidence in China's future.

This photo was taken at the moment when Deng Xiaoping, then Chairman of the Central Military Commission, stood in the sunroof of a limousine and started his inspection of the PLA troops, just as he was leaving Tiananmen Rostrum through the famous Jinshui Bridge.
