What Does Happiness Come from

This story is about a beautiful,well-dressed lady who complained to her psychiatrist that she felt her whole life was empty and meaningless.

So the doctor called over the old lady who cleaned the office floors, and then said to the rich lady,“I'm going to ask Mary here to tell you how she found happiness. All I want you to do is to listen.”

So the old lady put down her broom and sat on a chair and told her story,“Well,my husband died of malaria and three months later my only son was killed by a car. I had nobody……I had nothing left.I couldn't sleep;I couldn't eat;I never smiled at anyone;I even thought of taking my own life. Then one evening a kitten followed me home from work.Somehow I felt sorry for that kitten. It was cold outside,so I decided to let the kitten in.I got it some milk, and it licked the plate clean. Then it rubbed against my leg,and for the frst time in months,I smiled. Then I stopped to think:if helping a kitten could make me smile, maybe doing something for people could make me happy.

“So the next day I baked some biscuits and took them to a neighbor who was sick in bed. Every day I tried to do something nice for someone. It made me so happy to see them happy.Today,I don't know of anybody who sleeps and eats better than I do.I've found happiness,by giving it to others.”

When she heard that, the rich lady cried. She had everything that money could buy,but she had lost the things which money couldn't buy.

Happiness Is a Flow of Air

A merchant prince collected many precious antiques, calligraphy and paintings, various pearls, emeralds and the like. In order to prevent theft,he installed a tight security system and rarely went to enjoy them every day, only as part of his personal wealth to show off.

One day, seized by a whim, the rich merchant decided to let the building dustman widen his view. When he entered, the dustman didn't reveal his envy, but slowly looked through them one by one and enjoyed them carefully.Out of the thick steel door, the businessman couldn't help faunting,“What about them?Having seen so many good things, aren't you well worth your lifetime?”

The dustman said,“Yes,I now feel myself as rich as you,and happier than you.”

The businessman was extremely puzzled, looking unhappy.

“I have seen all your treasures,so am I not rich as you?And I don't have to worry about those things,so am I not happier than you?”

To appreciate is often happier than to possess.

The Source of Happiness

Life is like a heavy truck,so happiness and sorrow are like the two wheels. No cross,no crown. No pain,no joy. There are two different minds. One is that to live a day is to leave a day.The other is that to live a day is to enjoy a day.Just one word difference,it has refected the complete reverse state of psychology.Life is like the course that is investing all the time. Therefore,in a sense, life is the capital.

Life is like a book. There are two pens that can write this book. One is writing growth while the other is writing caducity. One is describing success while the other is describing failure. In other words, one is depicting happiness and the other is showing sorrow as well.

When you have it,you should utilize it well and make it develop great actions. Please remember, the active attitude creates wonderful life while the negative attitude waste lifetime.

One noon,a rich lady went to visit a poor but happy family. When she was about to knock at the door, she heard someone speaking in the room.

A little girl said,“Would you like some braised pork today?”

Another girl said,“No. I would like some toasted chicken.”

Following the words, the lady knocked at the door and went into the room. She saw them sitting at a table.Surprisingly, there were only some pieces of thin and dry bread, two cold potatoes and a jar of water on the table. The lady asked them what the matter was. They said that they imagined that,so poor food was turned into many kinds of delicious food.

One girl said,“When you consider it as pancakes, the bread will be very tasty.”

Another girl said,“If you consider bread as ice-cream,it will be more delicious.”

When the lady left the family, she had a new understanding of happiness. She found that the source of happiness is not substance, but human's heart.Where is the happiness in our life?It is in our heart.

The Light of a Smile

About ten years ago I was stuck in an abusive relationship. The relationship lasted 10 years and during that time all my thoughts were negative and circled around how I was going to get out of that relationship alive and with my children. The negativity had pulled me so far away from the truth that I was blind towards anything good.

Then one day I went to the bank. I was standing in line and as usual I was totally caught up in my thoughts about survival.I suddenly had the feeling that someone was watching me.I looked up and saw a man with his son standing in line in front of me.The man and the child were looking at me,then looking at each other and looking at me again. Both of them had a light around them that I had never seen before, they did not say a word, but smiled.I don't recall but I probably did not smile back.I was too stunned.I forgot everything around me,my life, the bank and all happenings. As soon as I was done with my transaction at the bank I ran outside to see where they were heading. But they were gone. But the smile was deeply imbedded into my soul.I found the strength to leave the relationship and start a new life. For me those two“visitors”were angels.

When I think back at this beautiful experience that helped me to change my life,I feel blessed for all it took was a smile and I have plenty of them now to give away. An old saying goes,“If you don't have something positive to say, don't say anything at all.”I would like to rephrase that saying to,“If you don't have something positive to say,at least smile.”The truth is not what is said in words, but the words unsaid in a smile.

The Essence of Happiness

There was a man who tried his best to make money in youth, fnally attained his goal in middle age and became a millionaire. But the rich substance didn't make him happy for his attained dream.Instead, one of his senior high school classmates who ran a vanilla garden lived an ordinary but happy life, always with a smile on the face.He was very puzzled about it.

One day,he was reluctant to ask his classmate,“My money can buy 100 vanilla gardens, but why am I not as happy as you?”

Pointing to the window next to them, his classmate asked,“From the windowwhat have you seen?”

The rich man said,“I've seen many people strolling in the garden.”

The classmate asked again,“What have you seen in the mirror?”

Seeing he was so haggard in the mirror,he said,“I only see myself.”

The classmate asked,“Which landscape is vaster?”

The rich man said,“Of course it is through the window.”

The classmate said with a smile,“Just because you live in the world of a mirror! When you try to take off the quicksilver on the back of the mirror, you will see the world.”

Happiness comes from share and devotion. The essence of the meaning of life does not lie in the possession, but in the share. The one who shares happiness with others will always enjoy the countless happiness.

He Who Can Be Moved Will Be Happy

“We can be moved everywhere,as if spring is the nourishment of life, but we always hurry on,suffering from thirst.”

Going to work every day,I cross the zebra crossing at the east entrance of the university and go on eastwards to my offce building. Most of the time when I just come to the junction, the red light at the crosswalk lights up and I have to wait.It was the same that day that I occasionally turned around when I suddenly saw beside the enclosure of the expansion site of the campus remaining the two old willow trees, whose huge green crowns glitter in the morning sun and undulate with the breeze, perfectly beautiful.

At that moment,I was deeply moved.

That night,I wrote in the diary,“It was an intolerable red light when I rushed to work, but surprisingly,an occasional turning round gave me one whole day's happiness,or even the sense of happiness reviving the memory of the willow trees any time in my lifetime.”

In this world sometimes we are mentally tired, sometimes we are physically tired, and sometimes life seems a hard journey faraway. However, the sudden pigeon whistle passing overhead surprise us,and this is the advent of being touched unexpectedly. As if the pure cotton protecting our body and mind, being moved makes us dwell in the homes of considerate happiness.

Whether the natural beauty of the survived willow trees,or the minor details of a child growing up,or the conscientious assistance that human suffering arouses,is all the branches that the fower that we are moved blooms and bear the fruit of happiness for us.

He who can be moved will be happy.

Happiness of Saying Thanks

In our life,we have rarely expressed our gratitude to the one who'd lived those years with us. In fact,we don't have to wait for anniversaries to thank the ones closest to us—the ones so easily overlooked. If I have learned anything about giving thanks,it is this:give it now! While your feeling of appreciation is alive and sincere, act on it.Saying thanks is such an easy way to add to the world's happiness.

Saying thanks not only brightens someone else's world,it brightens yours. If you're feeling left out, unloved or unappreciated, try reaching out to others. It may be just the medicine you need.

Of course, there are times when you can't express gratitude immediately. In that case don't let embarrassment sink you into silence—speak up the frst time you have the chance.

Once a young minister,Mark Brian, was sent to a remote parish of Kwakiutl Indians in British Columbia. The Indians,he had been told, did not have a word for thank you.But Brian soon found that these people had exceptional generosity.Instead of saying thanks,it is their custom to return every favor with a favor of their own,and every kindness with an equal or superior kindness. They do their thanks.

I wonder if we had no words in our vocabulary for thank you, would we do a better job of communicating our gratitude?Would we be more responsive, more sensitive, more caring?

Thankfulness sets in motion a chain reaction that transforms people all around us—including ourselves. For no one ever misunderstands the melody of a grateful heart.

Keeping Pleasant

“He is a fool who cannot be angry, but he is really a wise man who won't.”

The habit of keeping pleasant is indeed better than an income of a million dollars a year. The life without cheerfulness is like the severe winter without the sun.

We all love cheerful company, but we are apt to forget that cheerfulness is a habit which can be cultivated by all.

We find it very difficult to be gay when we are in distress. It requires great courage. We should never forget that to be cheerful when it is not easy to be cheerful shows greatness.Thorny may be our way,but how happy is the conqueror's song!

The perfection of cheerfulness consists in the happy frame of mind. It is displayed in good temper and kind behavior. It arises partly from personal goodness and partly from belief in the goodness of others. It can make people see the glory in the grass and the sunshine on the fower. It encourages happy thoughts, and lives in an atmosphere of peace. It costs nothing, and yet it is invaluable. It blesses its possessor, and affords a large measure of enjoyment to others.

To light up other's heart, one's own heart must be lit frst.

Happiness Is like the Sunshine

“There's the dearest little old gentleman,”says James Buckham,“who goes into town every morning on the 8:30 train. I don't know his name, and yet I know him better than anybody else in town.He just radiates cheerfulness as far as you can see him. There is always a smile on his face, and I never heard him open his mouth except to say something kind, courteous,or good-natured.Everybody bows to him, even strangers, and he bows to everybody. If the weather is fne,his jolly compliments make it seem finer;and if it is raining, the merry way in which he speaks of it is as good as a rainbow.”

“The inborn geniality of some people,”says Whipple,“amounts to genius.”There are those whose very presence carries sunshine with them wherever they go;a sunshine which means pity for the poor, sympathy for the suffering, help for the unfortunate and benignity toward all.

Everybody loves the sunny soul. His very face is passport anywhere. All doors fy open to him.He disarms prejudice and envy, for he bears good will to everybody. He is as welcome in every household as the sunshine.

“He was quiet, cheerful, genial,”says Carlyle in his“Reminiscences”concerning Edward Irving's sunny helpfulness.“Irving's voice was to me one of blessedness and new hope.”

And to William Wilberforce the poor Southey paid his tribute,“I never saw any other man who seemed to enjoy such perpetual serenity and sunshine of spirit.”

When Goldsmith was in Flanders he discovered the happiest man he had ever seen. At his toil, from morning till night,he was full of song and laughter.Yet this sunny-hearted being was a slave, maimed, deformed, and wearing a chain. How wellhe illustrated that saying,if there is no bright side,to polish up the dark one!

The frst prize at a fower show was taken by a pale, sickly little girl, who lived in a close, dark court in the east of London. The judges asked how she could grow it in such a dingy and sunless place. She replied that a little ray of sunlight came into the court;as soon as it appeared in the morning, she put her fower beneath it,and,as it moved, moved the fower,so that she kept it in the sunlight all day.

“Water, air and sunshine, the three greatest hygienic agents, are free, and within the reach of all. Twelve years ago,”says Walt Whitman,“I came to Camden to die.But every day I went into the country, bathed in the sunshine, lived with the birds and squirrels and played in the water with the fshes,I received my health from nature.”

“It is the unqualifed result of all my experience with the sick,”said Florence Nightingale,“that second only to their need of fresh air is their need of light;that, after a close room, what most hurts them is a dark room;and that it is not only light, but direct sunshine they want.”

The sun, making all living things grow, exerts its happiest infuence in cheering the mind of man and making his heart glad. If a man has sunshine in his soul,he will go on his way to happiness, content to look ahead under a cloud, not bating one jot of heart or hope if for a moment cast down, and not only happy himself, but giving happiness to others.

Pleasure Is a Freedom Song

Pleasure is a freedom song, but it is not freedom. It is the blossoming of your desires, but it is not their fruit;it is a depth calling unto a height, but it is not the deep or the high;it is the caged bird taking wing, but it is not space encompassed.Ay,in very truth, pleasure is a freedom song. And I fain would have you sing it with fullness of heart;yet I would not have you lose your hearts in singing.

Some of your youth seek pleasure as if it was all,and they are judged and rebuked. I would not judge nor rebuke them.I would have them seek, for they shall fnd pleasure, but not her alone;seven are her sisters, and the least of them is morebeautiful than pleasure.Have you not heard of the man who was digging in the earth for roots and found a treasure?

And some of your elders remember pleasures with regret like wrongs committed in drunk. But regret is the beclouding of the mind and not its chastisement. They should remember their pleasures with gratitude,as they would the harvest of a summer.Yet if it comforts them to regret, let them be comforted.

And there are among you those who are neither young to seek nor old to remember;and in their fear of seeking and remembering they shun all pleasures, lest they neglect the spirit or offend against it.

But even in their foregoing is their pleasure. And thus they too fnd a treasure though they dig for roots with quivering hands.

But tell me,who is he that can offend the spirit?Shall the nightingale offend the stillness of the night,or the frefy the stars? And shall your fame or your smoke burden the wind?

You think the spirit is a still pool which you can trouble with a staff. Oftentimes in denying yourself pleasure you do but store the desire in the recesses of your being.

Who knows but that which seem omitted today, waits for tomorrow?Even your body knows its heritage and its rightful need and won't be deceived.

And your body is the harp of your soul, and it is yours to bring forth sweet music from it or confused sounds.

And now you ask in your heart,“How shall we distinguish that which is good in pleasure from that which is not good?”Go to your felds and your gardens and you shall learn that it is the pleasure of the bee to gather honey of the fower, but it is also the pleasure of the fower to yield its honey to the bee,for to the bee a fower is a fountain of life, and to the fower a bee is a messenger of love, and to both, bee and fower, the giving and the receiving of pleasure is a need and an ecstasy.

Be in your pleasures like the fowers and the bees.

World of Smiles

About ten years ago when I was in college,I was working as an intern at my University's Museum of Natural History. One day while working at the cash register in the gift shop,I saw an elderly couple come in with a little girl in a wheelchair.

As I looked closer at this girl,I saw that she was kind of perched on her chair. I then realized she had no arms or legs, just a head, neck and torso. She was wearing a little white dress with red polka dots.

As the couple wheeled her up to me I was looking down at the register. I turned my head toward the girl and gave her a wink.As I took the money from her grandparents,I looked back at the girl, who was giving me the cutest, largest smile I have ever seen. All of a sudden her handicap was gone and all I saw was this beautiful girl, whose smile just melt me and almost instantly gave me a completely new sense of what life was all about. She took me from a poor, unhappy college student and brought me into her world:a world of smiles, love and warmth.

That was ten years ago. I'm successful person now.And whenever I get down and think about the troubles of the world,I think about that little girl and the remarkable lesson about life that she taught me.

The Value of Smile

You must have a good time meeting people if you expect them to have a good time meeting you.

I have asked thousands of people to smile at someone every hour of the day for a week and then come to class and talk about the results. How did it work?Let's see……here is a letter from William B.Steinhardt,a New York stockholder. His case isn't isolated. In fact,it is typical of hundreds of cases.

“I have been married for over eighteen years,”wrote Mr. Steinhardt,“and in all that time I seldom smiled at my wife or spoke two dozen words to her from the time I got up until I was ready to leave for business.I was one of the worst grouches who ever walked down Broadway.

“When you asked me to make a talk about my experience with smiles,I thought I would try it for a week. So the next morning, while combing my hair,I looked at my glum mug in the mirror and said to myself,‘Bill, you are going to wipe the scowl off that sour puss of yours today. You are going to smile. And you are going to begin right now.'As I sat down to breakfast,I greeted my wife with a‘Good morning,my dear,'and smiled as I said it.

“You warned me that she might be surprised. Well, you underestimated her reaction. She was bewildered. She was shocked.I told her that in the future she could expect this as a regular occurrence, and I kept it up every morning.

“This changed attitude of mine brought more happiness into our home in two months since I started than there was during the last year.

“As I leave for my offce,I greet the elevator operator in the apartment house with a‘Good morning'and a smile;I greet the doorman with a smile. I smile at the cashier in the subway booth when I ask for change. As I stand on the foor of the Stock Exchange,I smile at people who until recently never saw me smile.

“I soon found that everybody was smiling back at me,I treat those who come to me with complaints or grievances in a cheerful manner,I smile as I listen to them and I find that adjustments are accomplished much easier. I find that smiles are bringing me dollars, many dollars every day.

“I share my office with another broker. One of his clerks is a likable young chap, and I was so elated about the results I was getting that I told him recently about my new philosophy of human relations. He then confessed, when I frst came to share my offce with his frm he thought me a terrible grouch—and only recently changed his mind.He said I was really human when I smiled.

“I have also eliminated criticism from my system. I give appreciation and praise now instead of condemnation. And these things have literally revolutionized my life.I am a totally different man,a happier man,a richer man, richer in friendships and happiness—the only things that matter much after all.”

You don't feel like smiling? Then what? Two things. First, force yourself to smile. If you are alone, force yourself to whistle or hum a tune or sing.Act as if you were already happy, and that will tend to make you happy.Everybody in the world is seeking happiness—and there is one sure way to find it.That is by controlling our thoughts.Happiness doesn't depend on outward conditions. It depends on inner conditions.

It isn't what you have or who you are or where you are or what you are doing that makes you happy or unhappy. It is what you think about it.For example, two people may be in the same place, doing the same thing;both may have about an equal amount of money and prestige—and yet one may be miserable and the other happy. Why?Because of a different attitude.I have seen just as many happy faces among the poor peasants toiling with their primitive tools in the devastating heat of the tropics as I have seen in air-conditioned offces in New York,Chicago or Los Angeles.

“There is nothing either good or bad,”said Shakespeare,“but thinking makes it so.”

Abe Lincoln once remarked,“Most folks are about as happy as they make up their minds to be.”He was right.

Whenever you go out-of-doors,draw the chin in,carry the crown of the headhigh;drink in the sunshine;greet your friends with a smile, and put soul into every handclasp. Do not fear being misunderstood and do not waste a minute thinking about your enemies.

Try to fix firmly in your mind what you would like to do;and then, without veering off direction, you will move straight to the goal. Keep your mind on the great and splendid things you would like to do,and then,as the days go sliding away, you will fnd yourself unconsciously seizing upon the opportunities that are required for the fulfillment of your desire.Picture in your mind the able, earnest, useful person you desire to be,and the thought you hold is hourly transforming you into the particular individual……Thought is supreme.Preserve a right mental attitude—the attitude of courage, frankness, and good cheer. To think rightly is to create. All things come through desire and every sincere prayer is answered.

Some years ago,a department store in New York City,in recognition of the pressures its sales clerks were under during the Christmas rush, presented the following homely advertisement:

THE VALUE OF A SMILE AT CHRISTMAS

It costs nothing, but creates much.It enriches those who receive, without impoverishing those who give.It happens in a fash and the memory of it sometimes lasts forever. It brings the rest to the weary, the daylight to the discouraged and the sunshine to the sad.Yet it can't be bought, begged, borrowed,or stolen, for it is something that is no earthly good to anybody till it is given away. And if the last-minute rush of Christmas buying some of our salespeople should be too tired to give you a smile, may we ask you to leave one of yours? For nobody needs a smile so much as those who have none left to give!

Smile at Strangers

Have you ever noticed or thought about how little eye contact most of us have with stranger? Why?Are we afraid of them? What keeps us from opening our hearts to people we don't know?

I don't really know the answers to these questions, but I do know that there is virtually always parallel between our attitude toward strangers and our overall level of happiness. In other words,it's unusual to fnd a person who walks around with her head down, frowning and looking away from people, who is secretly a peaceful, joyful person.

I'm not suggesting it's better to be outgoing than introverted, that you need to expend tons of extra energy trying to brighten others'days,or that you should pretend to be friendly. I'm suggesting, however, that if you think of strangers as being a little more like you and treat them not only with kindness and respect, but with smiles and eye contact as well, you'll probably notice some pretty nice changes in yourself. You'll begin to see that most people are just like you—most of them have families, people they love, troubles, concerns, likes, dislikes, fears, and so on.You'll also notice how nice and grateful people can be when you're the frst one toreach out. When you see how similar we all are,you begin to see the innocence in all of us.In other words, even though we often mess up,most of us are doing the best that we know how with the circumstances that surround us.Along with seeing the innocence in people comes a profound feeling of inner happiness.

Where the Sun Always Rises

“Get up!Get up!”my mother whispers. My eyes flash open in the predawn gray.Sleepily,I look around the screened-in porch of our family's log cabin, where we spend our summer weeks.

I take in the dock-green porch swing, the birch-leg table, the twin bed where my sister sleeps, the smoky gloss of the kerosene lantern. My face feels the coolness of the early-morning air.

I relax and curl deeper beneath the blankets'warmth.“Get up!”my mother whispers again.“The sunrise is glorious!”Careful not to let the screen door slam, she sets off down to the lake.

Get up to see the sunrise? The last thing this 14-year-old wants to do is leave a warm bed to see the sun rise. It's freezing out there.

My 17-year-old sister pushes back her covers and sits up. I make a supremeeffort and struggle out too.We grab my father's World War II army blankets and wrap them tightly around our cotton nighties. Our pace is quick. One of us misses catching the screen door.It slams.

Carefully,we pick our way over slippery rocks and prickly pine needles, down 49 dew-covered log steps to the shore. We catch our breath and look up.Across the lake,a sliver of brilliant red crests the top of the shadowed forest. It outlines our mother on the lakeshore, the frst light catching the soft red of her hair.

Hues of purplish, rose and amber begin to pulsate in the sky. High above,in the soft blue,a lone star still sparkles.Silver mist rises gently from the lake. All is still.

Suddenly, the curve of a brilliant sun bursts through the dark forest. The world begins to awaken.A blue heron rises from a distant shore and gently fans its way over the water. Two ducks make a rippled landing near our dock, while a loon skims along the edge of a nearby island, hunting its morning food.

Breathing the chill air,the three of us draw our blankets closer. At last, the soft hues of dawn turn bright with the new day.The star fades. My sister and I took one more look and race back to bed.

My mother is reluctant to leave the sunrise amphitheater. It is a while before I hear her reach the top step and gently close the porch door.

Keep Walking in Sunshine

I hadn't walked across our old farm in ffteen years. Yet the sensations came flooding back.I could smell the freshness of new mown alfalfa.I could feel the sun's sudden warmth on my wet shoulders when it reappeared after a brisk July thunderstorm.

Rain or shine,I used to walk this path each day to see Greta. She always made me smile, even after Sis and I had just had a big squabble.I would help Greta with her chores. Then we would visit over a generous helping of her delicious homemade chocolate cookies and ice cream.Being confned to a wheel chair didn't stop Greta from being a fabulous cook.

Greta gave me two of the greatest gifts I've ever received. First, she taught me how to read. She also taught me that when I forgave Sis for our squabbles,it meant I wouldn't keep feeling like a victim.Instead,I would feel sunny.

Mr. Dinking, the local banker, tried to foreclose on Greta's house and land after her husband passed away. Thanks to Pa and Uncle John,Greta got to keep everything.Pa said that it was the least he could do for someone talented enough to teach me to read!

Soon folks were coming from miles around to buy Greta's homemade cakes, pies, bread, cookies, cider, and ice cream. Hank, the grocery store man, came each week to bring Greta supplies and stock his shelves.

Greta even had me take a big apple pie to Mr. Dinking who became one of her best customers and friends. That's just how Greta was.She could turn anyone into afriend!

Greta always said,“Dear, keep walking in sunshine!”

No matter how terrible my day started,I always felt sunny walking home from Greta's house—even beneath the winter starlight.

I arrived at Greta's house today just after sunset. An ambulance had stopped a few feet from her door. When I ran into the old house,Greta recognized me right away.

She smiled at me with her unforgettable twinkling blue eyes. She was almost out of breath when she reached out and softly touched my arm.Her last words to me were,“Dear, keep walking in sunshine!”

I'm sure that Greta is walking in the brightest sunshine she's ever seen. And,I'm sure that she heard every word I read at her memorial service.

I chose a beautiful verse by Leo Buscaglia. It's one that Greta taught me to read many years ago.

“Love can never grow old.

Locks may lose their brown and gold.

Cheeks may fade and hollow grow.

But the hearts that love will know,

Never winter's frost and chill,

Summer's warmth is in them still.”

Sunshine on a Rainy Day

Have you ever had a day when everything seemed to go wrong? Not too long ago I was having one of those days. I was discouraged, weary and sad.My focus was on me,me,me.After all,no one else was experiencing the same trials as I was.

I expressed my downcast state to my mother, hoping for some pity. Instead, she said,“I heard Jamie was having a diffcult day, too. Why don't you make her some cookies and we will take them to her this afternoon?”I didn't really want to,but I decided that I didn't want to go back to my other problems just yet.I made the cookies and arranged them on a little plate. Then I made a card with a sunfower on it and wrote a small note of comfort.

That afternoon we dropped by my friend's house. I went to the door andrang the bell.Soon,Jamie came to the door and looked at me in surprise for my unexpected visit. Before she could say anything,I rushed,“I heard you were having a hard day and decided to bring you something.I hope your day goes better.”The look that came over Jamie's face was one that I could never put into words. It was as if a darkened sky was suddenly lit with the golden rays of the sun;it was as if in that small act her day was brightened.

I got back into the car and for some amazing reason,I felt a lot better myself. That day I experienced the truth that James Barrie attempted to describe.“Those who bring sunshine to the lives of others cannot keep it from themselves.”
