How it works...

In this recipe, we configured and deployed an ESG. The ESG is a multifaceted construct that performs many functions in addition to routing, which will be explored in greater detail in Chapter 5, Configuring VMware NSX Edge Services Gateway. The ESG for this chapter will be used solely for routing and HA.

The ESG has been deployed in a Active/Standby HA arrangement, which creates two virtual machines that end with the -0 and -1 suffix. Either VM could be in the active or standby state, and preempt is not available on the ESG. At this point, only the base ESG has been deployed; neither routing nor any application functions have been configured.
