FOREWORD

For 112 years, Hong Kong Tramways (HKT)has witnessed the development of Hong Kong. I believe that most citizens, especially those living on the Hong Kong Island, have strong sentimental attachment towards trams. Without a doubt, tram is the collective memory shared among generations of Hong Kong people. It is not only a form of public transport, but also the living heritage and landmark unique in Hong Kong.

Tramcar is one of the earliest mass land transportation in Hong Kong. Before the opening of MTR and the flourishing of bus and minibus, tram was one of the main public transports with its affordable fare and fixed routes. Due to the increasing demand in the 60s and 70s, a trailer was attached to the back of ordinary tramcars. Today, with the variety of choices and the fierce competition, tram still holds a special place in the heart of many Hong Kong citizens.

HKT now owns and operates a fleet of 163 tramcars. It is the world's largest double-deck tram fleet still in operation, carrying an average of 200, 000 passengers every day. For more than 100 years, tram has spared no effort to improve its design. As the greenest mode of public transport in Hong Kong, HKT is committed to improve the comfort in cabin, while reducing the noise level. The service enhancing measures also include the installation of real-time positioning system. With the help of RFID technology, the system enables dispatch to increase tram efficiency and avoid bundling of trams. At the same time, HKT is dedicated to preserve the precious culture and heritage of tram. The launch of seventh-generation tram has marked the combination of modern interior design with traditional tram body exterior, in order to maintain tram's iconic image.

People love tram for its reserved but amiable hospitality.

Hop on a tram, passing through the dynamic street, passengers can laid back and enjoy the unique views of Sai Wan, Central, Wan Chai, North Point and the many faces of Hong Kong Island. The "ding-ding" sounds on board, mixed with the sound from the street, turn into a symphony unique to Hong Kong, bringing forth the vibrant breath of the city. This is the quality that attracts people not only to the community, but also to tram.

Tram has also unleashed creativities and initiated unlimited possibilities by providing a platform to merge arts into city life and society. For bands and artists, this is the stage to display their talents. For general public, this is the venue of free entertainment. This is the best showcase of the diversity and vitality of the metro.

"Hong Kong Tramways-Across the City, Across the Century"captured over 200 heritage tram photos, carrying Hong Kong culture and stories about trams. I would like to thank Mr. Eric Lee for his continuous support to trams. We would recommend this book to every tram-lover. Hope that every reader will continue to support the development of trams, while preserving and sustaining the unique tram culture. For tram is and will continuously be the witness of the past, present and future of Hong Kong.
