Preface

In this book，Dr.Dezhi Lu aptly describes the historical development and modern applications of capital，and the key role it can play in human development.Dr.Lu builds on his previous writings to integrate his two main theories—the Spirit of Capital and Collective Sharing.As Dr.Lu recognizes，capitalist and socialist systems have increasingly converged toward the“mixed economy”model over the last several decades.As capitalist nations place greater value on social welfare，and socialist societies embrace the importance of capital，humanity has and will continue to benefit.

With his extensive background in charitable giving，Dr.Lu also illuminates the necessity，and deep potential，of modern philanthropy.He rightly advocates for wealthy individuals and groups in China and elsewhere to expand their participation in philanthropy，and highlights the advantages of doing so.As Dr.Lu holds，modern philanthropy is perhaps the best approach by which we can harness the power of capital to address social problems and advance human development.Particularly at this point in China's economic development，strengthening its culture of charitable giving is essential.Dr.Lu not only describes the current state of philanthropy in China，but also provides a useful framework for creating a supportive social environment in which philanthropy can thrive.

We are fortunate to have strong voices，such as Dr.Lu's，to advocate for such progress.If Dr.Lu's example is followed to a greater extent，our societies will have much better means to advance social development and enhance the lives of those in need.
