7.decide,determine,resolve和make up one’s mind之间的区别
(1)decide表示“做出决定”“判决”“判定”或“决定做……”,接从句时表示“断定”。主语往往是人或机构,如:
1.You have to decide which tie to wear.
2.The two parties have decided to initiate a second talk soon.
3.Adolescents have to decide on their future career.
4.I have been wondering how the judges will decide the case.
5.The host country for 2012 Olympic Games will be decided at this meeting.
6.Lartet came and studied the spot carefully.He decided that the skeletons were those of an old man.
(2)determine经常表示“决心”(往往接不定式),“决定……的性质或特点”(接名词),“判定或确定”(接名词和疑问词引导的从句),如:
1.The Chinese are determined to build the country into a world power.(决心)
2.It is universally recognized that genes determine heredity(人们公认基因决定遗传).
3.The government is to make a decision that determines the future of the country.(决定国家的未来)
4.According to the Sapir-Whorf hypothesis,language determines thought.(语言决定思维)
5.A series of tests will be conducted to determine the levels of water pollution.(确定)
6.Are they(differences in intelligence)largely determined by the genes we inherit from our parents?(取决于)

与be determined to do…意义接近的结构有be set to do…或be bent on doing…,如:
…like a scientist bent to making a discovery
…look set to achieve his goal
