Foreword 2

It is always a special moment in our field when dedicated physicians and researchers take the time to share their knowledge and experience with their colleagues. This marvelous book is the first in Chinese to discuss the important topic of managing astigmatism during cataract surgery. It provides invaluable information to practicing ophthalmologists as well as residents and fellows.
Astigmatism management has become a critical aspect of correcting the vision of our cataract patients. It is a complex topic, involving extensive preoperative assessment, careful surgical planning, meticulous surgery, and detailed assessment and management of the surgical outcome. This book is a superb guide to better understanding of all these issues.
With its 12 chapters, this book is remarkably comprehensive, covering all major aspects of astigmatism correction during cataract surgery. Topics include basic concepts of astigmatism, principles and devices for measuring astigmatism, vector analysis, preoperative evaluation of astigmatism in the cataract patient, surgical options for correcting corneal astigmatism, corneal relaxing incisions, and a detailed and thoughtful discussion of toric IOLs: types, selection, surgical steps, and postoperative evaluation.
This book is an invaluable resource for cataract surgeons. Although it deals with the complex concept of astigmatism, the chapters are easy to follow and understand. I particularly like the authors’inclusion of clinical cases in many of the chapters, with a full chapter that describes management of special clinical cases. These cases provide wonderful practical insights for the cataract surgeon.
I am deeply impressed by the list of contributors, representing the top surgeons and outstanding researchers from many areas in China. I congratulate the authors and know that my colleagues in China will find this book to be of great value.
