Connection-oriented protocols

Connection-oriented protocols, prior to transferring data, establish an end-to-end logical connection, which is often known as a virtual link between two devices. Connection-oriented protocols use the circuit switching method of data transmission, where concepts like handshaking and acknowledgment come into play. Packets follow the same route and reach the destination in the same order as they are delivered, thus making connection-oriented protocols known as reliable network services. An example of connection-oriented protocols would be the phone call, as in Figure 2.9, in which a logical connection is made before the conversation starts. The most known connection-oriented protocol is the Transmission Control Protocol (TCP).
