Preface 1
Pediatric Clinical Pharmacology is a relatively new and under-appreciated but critically important specialty that has much to offer anyone who wishes to provide rational, maximally effective treatment of children.Professor Li Wang is a pioneer in Chinese pediatric clinical pharmacology. As early as 12 years ago she have compiled a comprehensive, single text that attempted to cover most,if not all, important aspects of pediatric clinical pharmacology. The chapters of the new version contain both basic, laboratory, and clinical aspects of pediatric therapeutics.Individual experts in the diagnosis and treatment of children provide their perspectives on their specific areas of expertise and others discuss more general views on pediatric drug development and clinical therapeutics.Recognition of the importance and unique aspects of pediatric patients is occurring at the same time that the importance and unique aspects of China and Chinese medicine are being acknowledged. It is therefore appropriate that this book emphasizes both the unique nature of children and the current state of their treatment in the country where the largest number of children live.It is hoped that this book will help advance knowledge and practice of pediatric clinical pharmacology and therapeutics in all countries of the world and that many future, updated editions of this book will be used to educate all of us who care about children.
I would like to take this opportunity to comment on Professor Wang, who worked for me as a postdoctoral fellow for 3 years(1987~1990)in my Division of Clinical Pharmacology/Toxicology,Columbus Children’s Hospital(now Nationwide Children’s Hospital)at the Ohio State University. She is hardworking, dedicated scientist who won a competitive international clinical pharmacology award and did excellent work. After her post-doctoral work in Ohio she resolutely returned to work in China where she initiated(in 2002)the first Peking University TDMCT center in China. She was honored by her election as the first Chinese Councilor of the International Association of Therapeutic Drug Monitoring and Clinical Toxicology(IATDMCT)and had served the two terms(two years for each term)during 2003~2007.She served as the Congress Chairman and successful host of the First IATDMCT Regional Meeting and National Pediatric Pharmacology Conference in China in 2010.She established the Chinese Society of Pediatric Clinical Pharmacology in 2011 in China.I am pleased but not surprised at all by her many successes after many years of hard work.I expect her and her team to continue to make greater contributions to TDMCT and pediatric clinical pharmacology, both in China and the rest of the world.
