Viewing and changing site settings

SharePoint lets you view and modify various aspects of your site any time after it's been created.

In this recipe, we will learn how to view and change the basic information for a site, such as its title, description, or logo. We will also learn how to change advanced settings for a site, such as disabling the left navigation for a Team site.

Getting ready

Which settings you are allowed to change depends on your permissions within the site. The Edit and Design permission levels allow you to change certain features, such as the ability to edit site navigation and the site theme. The Full Control permission level gives you the greatest control over various site settings.

This recipe assumes you have Full Control access to the site.

How to do it...

To disable the Quick Launch for your site, follow these steps:

Browse to the site that you would like to change the settings of.

Click on the Settings gear icon in the top-right corner.

Click Site information, as shown in the following screenshot:

This takes you to the edit Site Information page. You can carry out the following actions on this page:

Change the site logo, name, and description

Change the privacy settings of the site

Change the hub association for the site (refer to the Creating a modern site recipe in Chapter 2, Introduction to SharePoint Online, to learn what a hub site is)

View or change advanced site information

Delete the site (you can use this link to delete a site if you have Full Control access to it)

Click View all site settings, as shown in the following screenshot:

View all site settings

Click Navigation Elements under the Look and Feel heading.

Uncheck the Enable Quick Launch checkbox and click theOKbutton.

Browse to the home page of your site.

You will notice that the Quick Launch menu no longer shows up for your Team site.

That's it! You just learned how to browse to the Site settings page and modify the settings for your site.

How it works...

You can change the various properties and settings of your site after it has been created. The type of settings that you can change not only depend on your permissions within the site but also on the type of site you have. For example, a Communication Site will not contain the Navigation Elements option we discussed in this recipe since communication sites do not contain the Quick Launch navigation menu to begin with.

The following screenshot shows a few other settings you can change within a Team site if you have Full Control access to it:

Most of the settings on this page are advanced admin settings and are beyond the scope of this book or have now been deprecated in the modern experience. Others, such as Site columns, Site content types, and User alerts, are covered throughout the various chapters and recipes in this book.
