美国新泽西州立罗格斯大学终身教授和美术部共同主任，北京大学专家特聘教授，中国八五美术新潮活跃艺术家，中美两国“科技奇点艺术”的倡导者和实验者。
曾任美国SIGGRAPH数字艺术协会常务理事、艺术画廊高级评审和学生动画评审主席。从事艺术创作和理论研究四十余年，在中美数字艺术和动画界拥有一定声誉。极力推崇“未来指导现在”和“指数”思维方式，其研究与强人工智能、虚拟、生物、脑电波、纳米、智能材料、智能穿戴、智能架构、生态能源、4D智能打印等科技相结合，颇具前沿性和远瞻性。
2012年他正式在美国SIGGRAPH提出“科技奇点艺术”的概念，次年在北京大学开创了中国首个科技奇点艺术研究生课程、在天津美术学院成立了奇点艺术与设计研究所、在美国罗格斯大学开设了北美首个科技奇点艺术必修课。近年来，他常受邀演讲于各种重要国际艺术研讨会和中美近百所高校，为中美未来科技艺术的创新研究辛勤耕耘、贡献颇大。
此外，他的研究还涉及观念动画、交互动画装置、数码艺术教育与评论，大量学术论文发表于北美和中国学术杂志。出版专著和画文集有《奇点艺术：未来艺术在科技奇点的冲击下的蜕变》《奇点：颠覆性的生物艺术》《数码自然艺术》《谭力勤数码艺术Ⅱ》《观念与技术》《三维角色动画和绑定》（合作），待出版著作有《奇点：强人工智能艺术》《不可视的艺术》等。
他的艺术创作融当代美术观念、先进数字技术和前沿动画理论为一体，独创“数码原始”观念交互动画装置形式，赢得美国及他国艺术界好评，曾荣获多类国际数码艺术头奖和金奖。美国当地媒介称他为“革命性的艺术家”。其大型个展巡展于世界各国美术馆和画廊，国内有中华世纪坛、上海多伦美术馆、798和宋庄美术馆等地。
LiOin Tan has showcased his inventive and autodidactic energy as an artist, educator, and researcher for four decades while teaching in China, Canada, Singapore, and the U.S.A.
He is currently a professor of art and co-director at Rutgers University-Camden, as well as a visiting professor at both Peking University and the Communication University of China. He has served as a core board member of SIGGRAPH's Digital Art Committee and as a chairperson for its Space-Time animation competition. He was also one of the essential activists during the 85 New Wave art movement of China.
Since transferring to the field of digital art, he has pioneered the“Digital-Primitive”concept, which has won great acclaim and awards from both American and international art scenes. His artworks have been exhibited nationally and internationally in both solo and group shows.
Recently, his research has focused on“Singularity Art”, which explores how the technology singularity could impact art in the future. His publications include numerous articles and six books, such as Singularity Art: How Technological Singularity Will Impact Art, Singularity: Subversive BioArt, Digital Natural Art, Tan's Digital Art Ⅱ, Tan On Art-Art On Tan, 3D Character Animation and Rigging. His new book Singularity: Strong A.I. Art and Invisible Art is set to be published soon.
