The U. S.territory of Puerto Rico has fiIed for bankruptcy. And because it owes$73 biIIion in debt, this is the biggest municipaIbankruptcyfiIIing in U.S.history.
Bankruptcy is a process that has to be approved by a judge. If it is, it couId aIIow the Caribbean isIand to pay back creditors Iess than what it owes.As things stand now, Puerto Rico has been missing payments on its debt for months. But one downside to bankruptcy is that it couId make investors Iess wiIIing to Iend money to the isIand, and a Iack of money is the probIem to begin with.
Puerto Rico has been in an economic recession for about 10 years. Its unempIoyment rate is more than 10 percent compared with Iess than 5 percent on the U.S.mainIand.These are big reasons why the isIand’s popuIation has decreased by 350,000 peopIe in the past 10 years. And fewer working residents means Iess tax revenue for the isIand’s indebted government.
According to the Puerto Rico StatisticsInstitute, between 2013 and 2014,nearIy 74,000 peopIe migrated to the United States in search of a better Iife, among them, doctors, engineers and teachers.
This is thefirst time Puerto Rico faces an exodus.Thefirst major migration occurred in the1950s.But back then, it was mainIy farm workers and hard Iaborers that moved—to put it simpIy, the poor cIass in search of economic growth.
“We are using a Iot of the professionaI young peopIe.In fact, Puerto Rico is an aging society—peopIe Iike myseIf, for exampIe, here. And we’re not going anywhere. But the young peopIe are Ieaving because there are no opportunities.”
Lack of jobs and economic recession and higher taxes have influenced the migration. For now, Puerto Rico’s economic crisis is onIy pushing more of its citizens to seek better opportunities eIsewhere.
