ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS

This glossary was developed jointly by a China working group headed by Mr. Lin Zhiqun in Beijing and a U.S. working group headed by Mr. John M. Geraghty in Washington. The members of the Chinese working group were Ms. Zhang Long, Mr. Sun Huasheng, and Ms. Sun Hanfu. Mr. Chen Zhanxiang, Mr. Sun Zengfan, and Mr. Le Baiyong were advisors to the group. The members of the U.S. working group were Ms. Kathleen M. Dell’Orto, Mr. Jack Underhill, and Mr. Frank Lee. Mr. Donald Fairman has served as a valued advisor. Assistance was also provided at various stages of the project by Mr. William Heenan, Ms. Susan C. Judd, Mr. Tsou-liang Tang, and Mr. Richard Metcalf.

We would especially like to thank two persons who were essential to the task:

Ms. Kathleen M. Dell’Orto

Translator/Lexicographer

U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, and

Ms. Zhang Long

Senior Editor

China Building Technology Development Center

The Chinese side would like to acknowledge the organizations and individuals that have given full support to the work, including the China Building Technology Development Center, the China Academy of Urban Planning and Design, Mr. Shang Kuo, and Mr. Li Changhong. Acknowledgement is also made of all the building design and research institutions and other related organizations throughout the country for the comments and suggestions they offered during the preparation of the drafts.

The U.S. side gratefully acknowledges the valuable information and organizations, including Mr. John Courtney and Mr. Benjamin Cukok, The World Bank, Washington, D.C.; Mr. Weiming Lu, Executive Director, Lowertown Redevelopment Corporation, St. Paul, Minnesota; Mr. David Syphard, CRS Sirrine, Houston, Texas; Mr. Eric Carlson Institute for Public Administration, New York, N.Y.; Mr. Warren Lasko, Executive Vice President of the Mortgage Bankers Association of America, Washington, D.C.; the information specialists of the U.S. Bureau of Statistics; the staff of the HUD Library; and the American Institute of Architects.

Ms. Harriett Holly and Ms. Jo Ellen Plummer of HUD and Ms. Hoai Hong of The World Bank typed many drafts of the text. Their long, patient hours on the details are much appreciated. The typing of the final Chinese language text by Eastern Computers, Inc., of Virginia Beach was made possible through a generous grant from Mr. Gordon Smith, President, Miller & Smith, one of the major home builders in northern Virginia.

Mr. Walter Stewart, a resourceful Chinese linguist, was of invaluable assistance in resolving the myriad problems of language and presentation that arose in the late phases of the project. Ms. Jina Bang, a gifted graphic artist, did the layout including pasting-up the bilingual texts.

The line drawings of buildings in China were supplied by Mr. Shang Kuo. The drawing of American buildings are taken from Clues to American Architecture, copyright c 1985,1986 by Marilyn W. Klein and David P. Fogle, illustrations copyright c 1985,1986 by Wolcott B. Etienne, and are reproduced here with the kind permission of Starrhill, Inc.

We, the editors, have benefitted immensely from the comments and insights of all advisors, but we assume full responsibility for any errors or misunderstandings contained in the glossary.
